Beertopia is Hong Kong’s largest craft beer festival. Started in 2012, the festival is now in its 5th year. The 2015 festival featured over 13,000 attendees at the Central Harbourfront trying over 500 different beers from around the world.
Beertopia was started by Jonathan So because there simply weren’t any craft beer festivals, or craft beer focused events in Hong Kong at the time. Originally from Toronto, and having lived in New York for many years, he was surprised to discover the lack of diversity in the beer selection in Hong Kong bars and restaurants at the time, and noticed a general apathy towards beer.
The goal of Beertopia is to provide an opportunity for people to taste and learn about quality beers they might not be aware of, and to do this in a fun and lively environment. While there are many food and wine events in Hong Kong that also include beer, good beer is typically an afterthought. By bringing beer to the forefront, hopefully the festival can help raise the interest of craft beer in Hong Kong.
Beertopia 2012 was the first year of the festival, which took place at the Western Market in Sheung Wan.
Beertopia 2013 & 2014 took place at the West Kowloon Waterfront.
Beertopia 2015 marked a return to Hong Kong island, with the festival held at the Central Harbourfront for the first time.
Beertopia 2016 took place at the Central Harbourfront between November 18-19
Beertopia 2017 will be at Central Harbourfront again in 2017 on the 22nd and 23th of September!
